Game Cancellation/Rescheduling Procedures

There have been a few weather related occasions in the past where we've had to remove a game from our schedule. With COVID-19 making this a more recurring thing, and the fact that we've been answering a mounting number of emails about this recently, we've documented our procedures for handling cancelled/rescheduled games and the resulting effects.

Do know that we will always make every effort to keep as many games as possible available for our users to pick.

However, because our Survivor, Pick 'Em, Confidence and Margin formats all share the same league schedules, our procedures take into account the effects of all pools running on the site with various configurations.

Scenarios:

  1. When a game is rescheduled to a different day of the same week
  2. When a game is rescheduled to a day of a different week, or cancelled altogether

Scenario 1 - When a game is rescheduled to a different day of the same week

Example: A Week 4 Sunday game is rescheduled to Monday of Week 4.

Procedure:
We update the date and time of the rescheduled game, and delete picks for the rescheduled game for pools that exclude the day the game is rescheduled to.

Effects if the game is rescheduled to a day that is included in your pool config

Example: A Week 4 Sunday game is rescheduled to Monday of Week 4, and Monday games are included in your pool config.

Effects to Survivor Pools:

None.

Effects to Pick 'Em, Confidence and Margin Pools:

None, unless:

When the above applies, the effect is that the rescheduled game becomes the tie-breaker game.

Effects to Survivor Pools:

Affected participants are notified to make a new pick.

Effects to Pick 'Em and Margin Pools:

Pick X Pools:
For pools configured to pick X games in a week, affected participants are notified to make a new pick.

Pick All Pools:
For pools configured to pick all games in a week, affected participants are notified despite there being no action to take.

Effects to Confidence Pools:

Pick X Pools:
For pools configured to pick X games in a week, affected participants are notified to make a new pick.

Pick All Pools:
For pools configured to pick all games in a week, weights are adjusted to reflect the new number of games in the week, and affected participants are notified despite there being no action to take.

Example: There are 16 games in the original week resulting in 15 games after the postponement, and someone has picked the rescheduled game with a weight of 8.

Default Scoring:
Pick of 8 is deleted, and picks with weights 9 to 16 are shifted down by one to yield the 1 to 15 available weights for the week.

Max Scoring:
Pick of 8 is deleted, and picks with weights 7 to 1 are shifted up by one to yield the 2 to 16 available weights for the week.

Important Notices:

Scenario 2 - When a game is rescheduled to a day of a different week, or cancelled altogether

Example: A Week 4 game is rescheduled to Week 7.

Procedure:
We remove the game from our schedule and delete all picks made for that game. For Pick All Confidence pools, pick weights are also automatically adjusted to reflect the week's new game count (more on this below).

When deciding whether to add the rescheduled game to the (new) week it's being rescheduled to, we again take into account the effects of all pools running on the site with various configurations. While it may sound like a simple task, adding a game to a future week can have adverse effects on Survivor and Confidence pools. When the effects are too great, we elect not to add the rescheduled game.

For cancelled games, we do the same except the game would never be re-added to the schedule.
